For Pete's Sake

Royals’ Matt Duffy was charged with an error after a ball went through his glove

Starter Ryan Yarbrough pitched a gem Monday night in the Royals’ 5-3 win over the Guardians in Cleveland, but there was an inauspicious beginning to his start.

The very first batter of the game reached on a weird play.

The Guardians’ Steven Kwan grounded to Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., whose throw was on the mark to first baseman Matt Duffy.

But Kwan reached when the ball went through Duffy’s glove.

How is that ruled? Unfortunately for Duffy, it was an error even though you could blame the miscue on equipment failure. It was Duffy’s first error as a first baseman this season.

And it was something you don’t see very often at the ballpark.
