For Pete's Sake

Cameraman at Yankees-Orioles game carted off field after being hit in head by throw

Once in a blue moon, you’ll see a camera operator at a baseball game get a shout-out for one of the announcers. But for the most part, the people behind the camera are unseen during a broadcast.

Unfortunately for Pete Stendel of the YES Network, everyone watching at home and at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night saw him.

Stendel was in the first base camera well at Yankee Stadium when an errant throw from Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson sailed over the head of first baseman Ryan O’Hearn, the former Royals player.

The ball hit Stendel in the head as he was behind the camera.

The New York Post said play was stopped for about 15 minutes as Stendel received medical attention.

Stendel was carted off the field and appeared to make a hang-loose sign.

“I hope he’s doing all right,” Henderson told MLB.com. “My prayers go out to him, and I’m just thankful for the guys that rushed over there to help him in aid.”

The YES Network said Stendel had tests done at a hospital and was conscious, so that’s a good update.

Stendel is an artist, according to his Instagram account, which has photos of his work.
