For Pete's Sake

You could make a case for this being the worst Hot Dog Race in Royals’ history

The Royals don’t keep records on these types of things, but surely the slowest Hot Dog Race in team history was held Monday night at Kauffman Stadium.

You likely know the drill, but if not here’s the scoop: fans dress in hot dog costumes with a specific condiment (mustard, ketchup or relish). The race begins in front of the Royals bullpen on the right-field warning track.

The contestants make a quick right turn and run in front of the Royals dugout, where the finish line can be found.

But on Monday when the race began, the contestants didn’t start running. They needed to be prompted again and then took off ... slowly.

The contestants meandered their way toward the finish line, which had to be moved up because of how slow the racers were running. It was, ahem, the wurst.

Mustard was the winner, but the Ketchup and Relish didn’t even finish the race.

Here is how things unfolded.
