Minor-league catcher tags out two runners at home plate for a weird double play

In the movie “Major League,” a hapless White Sox catcher somehow fails to tag two Cleveland runners who arrive at the plate within an eyelash of each other.

That couldn’t possibly happen in a real game, right?

Well ... something similar happened last week in a minor-league contest in Visalia, California.

The Class A San Jose Giants had runners on first and second in the sixth inning when Jose Ramos hit a double. Visalia Rawhide right fielder Danyer Sanabria threw the ball to second baseman Manuel Pena, who fired a strike to catcher Christian Cerda.

When Cerda caught the ball, there were two Giants runners trying to score. Cerda tagged out Anthony Rodriguez and then Tanner O’Tremba, who had nearly caught up to Rodriguez.

This went in the books as a 9-4-2 double play, but it was unlike any 9-4-2 double play most people had seen before. As the announcer said: “You don’t see that very often.”

Have you ever seen this even one time?
