Royals minor-leaguer hit Little League homer when team kept throwing ball to no one

You’ll notice there isn’t a third baseman at third base.

The Quad Cities River Bandits, who are the Royals’ High-A team, rallied from a three-run deficit on Wednesday and defeated the Beloit Sky Carp 4-3.

Outfielder River Towns started the rally by hitting a double to right field in the second inning. The Sky Carp then proceeded to throw the ball to unoccupied bases.

To quote Pepper Brooks of “Dodgeball” fame: “It’s a bold strategy, let’s see if it pays off for ‘em.”

It didn’t.

Beloit right fielder Osiris Johnson threw offline to second base, but there were no Sky Carp players around. The ball skipped into shallow left field and Towns took off for third.

Sky Carp left fielder Tanner Allen ran to the ball, spun and threw a dime to third base. Unfortunately, there was no third baseman at the bag, and Towns scored the Little League home run.

It was actually a double, of course, with errors on the right fielder and left fielder. When’s the last time you saw both corner outfielders charged with an error on the same play? It doesn’t happen often.

This was a weird (and funny) way to round the bases.
