If Peacock ends up streaming a Chiefs playoff game, it won’t affect viewers in KC
The NFL announced Monday that one of its six wild-card playoff games in January would be available as a streaming-only option.
NBC Sports’ streaming service, Peacock, will show the Saturday game on Jan. 13. Kickoff will be right after a late afternoon wild-card game that will air on NBC.
The Associated Press said a Peacock subscription costs $4.99 per month for the basic service. However, Chiefs fans won’t have to subscribe, even if Kansas City is playing in the game.
“With all our digital games, just like we’ve done for ESPN for years or NFL Network, the games have to be on over the air in the home markets,” Hans Schroeder, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of NFL Media, said last week in a conference call. “I would expect certainly that NBC owning Peacock chooses NBC stations to air those games. I would certainly expect that to be the case.”
However, fans in Kansas City who don’t have Peacock will be out of luck if they want to watch the Chargers-Bills regular-season game on Dec. 23. It’s a prime-time contest on Christmas weekend that will follow the Bengals-Steelers game, which airs on NBC.
That Chargers-Bills game on Peacock could be of interest in Kansas City given that Buffalo was in the running for the top seed in the AFC playoffs last year and LA is an AFC West rival.
And when the playoffs begin, if the Chiefs play a wild-card game on another network, fans in KC wouldn’t be able to watch the Peacock postseason contest without a subscription.
