We are nearing the ninth anniversary of one of the funnier moments in Royals broadcast history.

It was on May 14, 2014 that television cameras showed a full moon during a break in a Royals-Rockies game at Kauffman Stadium.

Bally Sports Kansas City broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre quipped it was a FCC rule that whenever there is a full moon it must be shown on a broadcast of a sporting event.

To which Hudler replied: “I like that rule. It’s a beautiful planet.”

That moment quickly went viral, and the moon-as-a-planet joke is still told often.

And it came up Tuesday in a Twitter exchange between NASA and the Royals. It started with NASA asking: “What’s your favorite planet?”

The Royals were among the more than 28,000 to offer a response and they quoted Hudler: the moon.

NASA came back with this zinger: “Wait. We thought you covered the whole ‘moon, star or planet’ concept with Hud.”

NASA has a sense of humor? Who knew?
