Royals’ Salvador Perez explains special meaning behind cane given to Lorenzo Cain
Shortly after the Royals defeated the White Sox 12-5 on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium, catcher Salvador Perez was invited to join the MLB Network.
Perez slipped on a headset but he wasn’t on “MLB Tonight” to discuss the Royals’ blowout victory. Instead, he was a surprise guest as former teammate Lorenzo Cain was being interviewed about Saturday’s retirement ceremony.
Cain was given a walking cane as a gift during the festivities, and it was presented to him by Perez.
The MLB Network hosts asked if there was a special meaning behind the cane.
“I’ve got to say, Lolo. Sorry, man,” Perez said.
Then Perez put his hand on his lower back and pretended to be slightly hunched over and in pain.
“Every time he got to the ballpark, every day, he’d just come in like that, come walking in like that (saying), ‘Salvy, I’m tired and my feet hurt.’ So we decided, OK, he needs a cane for the rest of his life,” Perez said with a laugh.
Cain cracked up at Perez’s revelation then said: “Center field is big out there, man. It’s big in center field.”
The two also talked about their favorite moments from the Royals’ 2014-15 seasons.
Greg Amsinger, host of “MLB Tonight” was happy to have Perez join the show.
“We want to produce unscripted television that fires fans up,” Amsinger said in a statement. “For Sal to take the time to surprise Lorenzo on ‘MLB Tonight’ was amazing. He helped us celebrate the career of his dear friend, and their obvious chemistry brought back so many incredible memories for Royals fans throughout the country. It was perfect.”
