Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes will be given a ‘special honor’ at the Kentucky Derby
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany rubbed elbows with some of the world’s biggest stars at Monday’s Met Gala.
Mahomes will be at another big bash on Friday when he goes to the Barnstable Brown Kentucky Derby Eve Gala the night before the country’s most famous horse race.
That gala raises money for the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center at the University of Kentucky, WRDB.com reported, and more than $17 million has been donated over the previous 14 years.
On Saturday, Mahomes will be at the Kentucky Derby, and he’s going to have a special job.
Lex 18, the NBC affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky, reported Mahomes will give the “Riders Up” command at the Derby.
What does that entail? Here is a description from the Kentucky Derby website: “’Riders Up!’ is the traditional command from the Paddock Judge for jockeys to mount their horses in advance of the upcoming race. But since 2012,Churchill Downs has reserved that special honor for a dignitary or celebrity attendee when it comes to the Kentucky Derby.”
Others who have been given the “special honor” include actor Jeff Bridges. He gave the ceremonial command at the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The jockeys did abide.
