Chris Jones says he has no desire to play for any team but the Chiefs in his career
The Washington Commanders on Sunday reportedly agreed with defensive tackle Daron Payne on a four-year, $90 million extension, according to multiple outlets.
Payne’s deal includes $60 million guaranteed, CBS Sports said, and it makes him the second-highest paid defensive lineman in the NFL behind Rams star Aaron Donald.
That’s significant because the Athletic’s Nate Taylor reported earlier this year that Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is seeking “an extension that will make him at least the second-highest paid player at his position.”
Jones has one year remaining on a four-year contract he signed ahead of the 2020 season. For the Chiefs, inking Jones to a new deal makes sense, because his salary-cap hit for the 2023 season would be $28.29 million, Spotrac notes.
On Sunday, a Chiefs fan asked Jones on Twitter if a contract extension was imminent. The fan hoped Jones, 28, would retire as a member of the Chiefs.
Jones responded by saying he wasn’t going anywhere.
“I’m a chief for life,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “I will not play for another franchise.”
Chiefs fans were thrilled by the response from Jones, and they showed their appreciation on Reddit and Twitter.
“What did we do to deserve this guy? No off the field issues, amazing talent, truly loves this city and this team. What a legend,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
Another shared this: “That’s what I like to hear. He wouldn’t look right in another uniform.”
A fan on Reddit wrote: “I am glad to hear a real team player right here.”
“I hope that’s true,” wrote another. “Love watching him play, he’s a true leader on the Defense and a great personality. I’d love for him to stay a Chief his whole career and be the face of the defense for the Mahomes era.”
A fan wrote on Reddit: “Mahomes, Kelce, Jones. We are witnessing an era. Pay that man.”
Another shared this: “Everyone go out and get this man’s jersey.”
