Lions president believes there’s a ’50-50 chance’ Detroit will face Chiefs in Germany
The center of the NFL world will be in Kansas City next month when the annual draft is held at Union Station.
Shortly after the NFL Draft, the league is expected to announce the 2023 schedule, and at that time the Chiefs will learn who they will face in Germany.
The Chiefs are giving up one of their nine home games in the upcoming season to play an undetermined foe in November in Frankfurt or Munich.
There has been previous speculation that the Lions could be the Chiefs’ foe in Germany, and a Detroit team official this week talked about that possibility.
Lions president Rod Wood told the Detroit Free Press he believes his team will be called upon to play an international game sooner rather than later. The Lions last played abroad in 2015 when they lost 45-10 to the Chiefs in London.
“I think it’s, I don’t know if it’s better than 50-50 but it’s at least 50-50 that the Chiefs game will be over there,” Wood told the Free Press. “We’re kind of due to go international.”
The Chiefs have played another international game since facing the Lions in 2015: a 24-17 win over the Chargers in Mexico City in 2019.
For Detroit, a potential game in Germany would be in place of facing the Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Wood told the Free Press every NFL team has to play a home game in an international city once every 10 years. Wood hopes the Lions can wait before they give up playing a game in Detroit, so judging my his comments, he seems open to the prospect of facing the Chiefs in Germany.
