Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes winced in pain late in the first half of Super Bowl LVII and the hearts of KC fans dropped.

But in the fourth quarter, Mahomes did what he has done so often: made an incredible and unlikely play that helped the Chiefs secure a victory.

Despite reinjuring the ankle, Mahomes scrambled for 26 yards on a drive that ended with Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal. This was a gutty run:

How big was that dash? The NFL’s Next Gen Stats said the Chiefs’ winning percentage jumped 12.1% on just that scramble.

An even bigger boost for the Chiefs’ win probability came on linebacker Nick Bolton’s 36-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the first half. That helped the Chiefs tie the game, and their win percentage doubled from 27% to 54%, Next Gen Stats said.

Here’s a look at the overall win probability chart for Super Bowl LVII, and it shows the Chiefs had just a 21.6% chance of defeating the Eagles at one point in the game.

The most important part of any win probability chart is the team that ends up with a 100% chance of victory, and that was the Chiefs on Sunday night.
