Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes was in pain after appearing to reinjure ankle in Super Bowl

A worst-case scenario for the Chiefs appeared to happen late in the first half of Super Bowl LVII.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who had suffered a high-ankle sprain in a Divisional playoff game against the Jaguars, didn’t appear to be hampered much by the injury through the first 28 minutes of the Super Bowl.

But with the Chiefs facing a third-and-15 play inside the 2 minute warning before halftime, Mahomes scrambled to avoid the Eagles pass rush. As Mahomes tried to find running room, Philadelphia’s T.J. Edwards swiped at Mahomes’ ankle and brought him to the ground.

It was clear immediately that Mahomes was in pain after he went to the ground. Mahomes moved gingerly toward the Chiefs sideline after the play.

Backup quarterback Chad Henne began warming up on the sideline, but the Chiefs didn’t get the ball back before halftime.

One possibly encouraging update: Mahomes was able to run, albeit gingerly, to the locker room at halftime.

Fox Sports’ Jimmy Johnson said Mahomes could be given pain medicine at halftime and possibly have his ankle taped.

Update

The NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo tweeted that Mahomes led his team out of the lockerroom and was jogging. Mahomes started the second half at quarterback for the Chiefs.
