Let’s just qualify things right away: picking the best fans is a nearly impossible task.

Best is a qualitative term. It would be like, say, St. Louis Cardinals fans saying they are the best fans in baseball.

Still, the good people at Emory Sports Marketing Analytics tried to quantify which NFL team has the best fans.

Chiefs fans checked in a No. 27.

No kidding.

That’s behind the likes of football fans in Detroit, San Diego and St. Louis.

The brain trust behind the rankings said it used “15 years of data on NFL team performance, ticket prices, market populations, median incomes, won-loss records and multiple other factors. We create statistical models of box office revenue, and then see which teams over- and under- perform the model’s predictions.”

The focus was on fan spending decisions, instead of, say, which team’s fans cheer the loudest.

In the introduction to the rankings, the authors wrote: “It’s one thing to just say you are a fan of a local team, and quite another to be willing to pay several thousand dollars to purchase a season ticket.”

Which, knowing that, makes it unsurprising that the Cowboys fans were ranked No. 1 (which also is a stomach-turner). Dolphins fans were No. 32.
