Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce can set NFL single-season records on Saturday
The No. 1 task for the Chiefs on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas will be defeating the Raiders and locking up the top seed in the AFC playoffs.
Along the way, a couple of Chiefs stars could make NFL history. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce have single-season records in their sights.
Here is a closer look at NFL records that could fall.
Travis Kelce
In Kelce’s case, he could break his own record.
Entering Saturday’s game, Kelce has exactly 1,300 receiving yards. The NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end in a season was set in 2020 when Kelce had 1,416 yards. With 117 receiving yards against the Raiders, Kelce will raise the bar a little higher for future tight ends.
The top three: Kelce (1,416 yards in 2020), George Kittle (1,377 in 2018) and Mark Andrew (1,361 in 2021).
If Kelce has a 100-yard receiving game, it’ll be the seventh time this season he’s reached the mark, which no tight end has ever accomplished in NFL history.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes reached 5,000 passing yards a week ago and has 5,048 heading into Saturday. With a big game, Mahomes can eclipse Peyton Manning’s single-season record of 5,477 passing yards in 2013. Mahomes would need 430 passing yards against the Raiders to get there.
The top three: Manning (5,477 in 2013), Drew Brees (5,476 in 2011) and Tom Brady (5,316 in 2021).
Another record is a little more in reach: passing and rushing yards combined in a season by a quarterback.
Mahomes has rushed for 329 yards this season, and 5,377 yards combined. The NFL record is held by Brees, who had 5,562 combined yards in 2011. Mahomes needs just 186 yards through the air or on the ground to set the NFL record.
The top three: Brees (5,562 yards in 2011), Manning (5,446 in 2013) and Brady (5,397 in 2021).
