Shannon Sharpe congratulates Chiefs’ Travis Kelce for passing him in NFL record book
One week after becoming the fifth tight end in NFL history with 10,000 receiving yards, Travis Kelce moved to fourth all-time during the Chiefs’ game Sunday in Houston.
Kelce hauled in a 12-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the Chiefs’ first drive against the Texans at NRG Stadium.
That gave Kelce 10,061 career receiving yards, 1 more than former Broncos star Shannon Sharpe had in his time with Denver and Baltimore.
Sharpe, who played from 1990-2003, is now a talk-show host on Fox Sports. He saw that Kelce moved ahead of him on the all-time list. Sharpe wrote a note on Twitter to Kelce.
“Congrats to my nephew @tkelce on passing me on the all time receiving yardage list by a T.E.,” Sharpe wrote. “Well deserved keep going.”
Kelce said this week on his “New Heights” podcast that he hopes to one day catch former Chiefs/Falcons star Tony Gonzalez for the most yards receiving by a tight end.
“How could you not,” Kelce asked his brother, Jason. “I’m trying to chase greatness, baby.”
Kelce, 33, added: “With that being said, I am a long way away from 15,000 yards. It took me 10 years to get two thirds of the way. So I would have to play ‘til I’m 37 and I think average about 70 to 80 yards per game all the way through to when I retire to be able to I believe touch 15,000 yards.”
