Patrick Mahomes on why Chiefs have been so successful on road against AFC West teams
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a .790 winning percentage in his 76 regular-season starts.
Remarkably, Mahomes and the Chiefs have been better when facing AFC West foes on the road. Significantly better. As in a 1.000 winning percentage.
The Chiefs have a 15-0 record in road games against AFC West teams since Mahomes became the starter.
During his weekly interview Monday on KCSP (610 AM), Mahomes was asked about the unbeaten streak and the reason for the Chiefs’ success.
“It’s impressive. When you really step back and look at it, it is really impressive,” Mahomes said. “I think it just comes with the focus that we have in this building. The coaches, they prepare in the offseason for these games against our division opponents.
“And then whenever we get to that game week, we know what week it is, we know we’re gonna play the Broncos and they’re gonna put up a fight and they’re gonna give us a great challenge. We had to execute at a high level in order to win (Sunday) and we were able to make things happen when it came down to it.”
Bet Kansas took a look at what that Chiefs’ dominance has meant for bettors who placed a $100 moneyline wager on each game.
For one, that would equate to $823.97 in winnings, which may not seem like much. But that’s because the Chiefs have been the favorite in their last 13 road games against AFC West teams.
The biggest payday would have come from the 2018 season opener against the Chargers in Los Angeles. Mahomes threw four touchdown passes that day in a 38-28 win in LA. The Chiefs were a +170 underdog, meaning a bettor would have taken home $270.
Later that season would have come the smallest payout. The Chiefs were -900 to beat the Raiders in Oakland. A $100 bet netted just $11.11 from the Chiefs’ 40-33 win over the Raiders, Bet Kansas noted.
