Andy Reid is just third coach in NFL history with 10-plus wins in eight straight seasons
Because the Chargers won Sunday night, the Chiefs will have to wait at least one more week before they can clinch a seventh consecutive AFC West championship.
With four games to play in the regular season, the Chiefs will win the West with just one victory or if the Chargers lose just once. No AFC West team has ever won seven straight division crowns.
The Chiefs’ run of success is not only the greatest in franchise history, it’s also one of the best in NFL history.
With Sunday’s 34-28 win over the Broncos, the Chiefs’ record improved to 10-3. It’s the Chiefs’ eighth straight season with 10 or more victories, all with coach Andy Reid in charge.
This is the 17th time in Reid’s 24 years as a head coach (with the Chiefs and Eagles) that his team has won 10-plus games.
Those two accomplishments are both noteworthy in NFL history, the league said.
Reid is now just the third coach in NFL history with 10 or more regular-season victories in eight consecutive seasons. The others are Patriots coach Bill Belichick (17 consecutive seasons from 2003-19) and former 49ers coach George Seifert (eight consecutive seasons from 1989-96).
Moving past Landry
Reid’s 17th 10-win season broke a tie for third-most in NFL history with Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry, who had 16 such seasons with the Cowboys.
Hall of Famer Don Shula and Belichick are tied for first with 20 seasons with 10 or more victories.
Sunday’s win was Reid’s 243rd in the regular season, which is the fifth-most in NFL history. Only 26 people have coached in at least 243 games in NFL history.
