For Pete's Sake

Final shot of Mizzou men’s basketball blowout win Sunday was a bad beat for bettors

The Missouri men’s basketball team rolled to an 82-53 win over Lindenwood on Sunday in Columbia.

Despite leading comfortably for most of the game, the Tigers didn’t appear to be on track to cover the spread of 28 1/2 points. With 9 minutes, 22 seconds left in the game, Lindenwood only trailed 59-48.

But Mizzou went on a 20-3 spurt and pushed its advantage to 28 points with 1:06 to play in the game. Now bettors had reason to sweat. But Lindenwood scored with 4 seconds left to make it a 79-53 score.

Certainly that would win it for those who took Lindenwood and the points, right? But Tigers guard Ben Sternberg launched a three-pointer from midcourt.

With this swish at the buzzer, the Tigers covered and gave bettors an “All-Time Bad Beat.”

Others couldn’t help but notice the other part of what made this such a bad beat: Fans thought Sternberg traveled before taking the shot.
