Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes breaks into the NFL’s top 100 in all-time passing yards
In just his fifth season as a starter, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has now thrown for the 100th most yards in NFL history.
Mahomes reached the top 100 during the Chiefs’ game Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium.
Entering the game, Mahomes was ranked 106th with 21,596 passing yards in the regular season. He needed 290 passing yards to break into the top 100 and he got it with a 10-yard pass to running back Jerick McKinnon in the fourth quarter.
Mahomes reached the milestone in his 72nd career game.
Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh had 21,886 passing yards with Washington and had been No. 100. Mahomes leaped over Baugh, along with Carson Wentz (No. 101), Jameis Winston (102), Jeff Blake (103), Jeff George (104) and Bobby Hebert (105) on the NFL’s career list.
Mahomes threw four touchdown passes and that gave him 176 in his career. That moved Mahomes past a trio of Hall of Famers on the career list and into 66th all-time.
Otto Graham and Steve McNair had been tied for 66th on the all-time list with 174 touchdown passes. Norm Von Brocklin, Joe Namath and Charlie Connerly each had 173 in their careers.
Mahomes sets NFL record
Mahomes’ second touchdown throw against the Jaguars was a record-breaker. That gave him 174, which was the most by a player in his first 75 games.
Hall of Famer Dan Marino had held the record with 173, and as noted, Mahomes was playing in just his 72nd game.
