Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster earned $1 million in incentives on Sunday
When receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs, headlines focused on the potential size of the contract: $10.75 million.
A closer look at the details showed Smith-Schuster’s base salary was $3 million, as the NFL Network reported. But he could receive the full amount by reaching incentives.
Smith-Schuster reached two of those incentives Sunday in the Chiefs’ 20-17 overtime win over the Titans. He had 10 catches and 88 receiving yards. For the season, Smith-Schuster now has 44 receptions for 582 yards.
According to Spotrac and Pro Football Talk, Smith-Schuster’s contract incentives give him $500,000 for reaching 40 receptions. He also gets $500,000 for hitting the 500-yard mark in receiving yards.
He got to both in Sunday’s game. That’s a million dollars and a team victory in one night. Not too shabby.
Here are some other incentives in Smith-Schuster’s contract, via Spotrac, and if met they would supplant the ones he reached Sunday.
- 50 receptions: $1 million
- 65 receptions: $1.5 million
- 650 yards: $1 million
- 900 yards: $1.5 million
Those all seem well within reach for Smith-Schuster. Other bonuses of note:
- 45% playing time: $500,000
- 65% playing time: $1.5 million
- Pro Bowl selection: $1 million
Smith-Schuster also can receive $500,000 if the Chiefs win the AFC Championship Game and he plays 50% of the snaps. If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl and he plays 50% of the snaps, Smith-Schuster would receive $500,000.
