For Pete's Sake

This stat line for Chiefs receivers Sunday hadn’t been seen in a KC game since 2000

JuJu Smith-Schuster led the Chiefs in receptions (seven) and receiving yards (124) in KC’s 44-23 win at San Francisco on Sunday.

Fellow wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling had his first game with 100-plus receiving yards as a member of the Chiefs, as he caught three passes for 111 yards.

The Chiefs said it was the 31st time in team history that two KC pass catchers had 100-plus receiving yards in a game. Ho-hum, right? After all, the week before Smith-Schuster and tight end Travis Kelce both had 100-plus receiving yards in the game against Buffalo.

What made Sunday’s double hundreds special is it was the first time two Chiefs wide receivers have done it in a game since 2000. That tidbit is from ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

Who were the two Chiefs receivers in that 2000 game? It was Derrick Anderson (139) and Sylvester Morris (102) in a 49-31 loss to the Raiders on Nov. 5, 2000. Oh by the way, tight end Tony Gonzalez had 134 yards receiving in that game.

Elvis Grbac was the quarterback that day. Morris was the Chiefs’ first-round pick that year and played just one season in the NFL.

The NFL Network noted Sunday’s game was the first time in Mahomes’ time as a starter that the Chiefs had two players with 100 or more receiving yards and neither was Travis Kelce nor Tyreek Hill.

Here are five other stats of notes from the Chiefs and others.

Mahomes chasing Marino

Patrick Mahomes had 423 passing yards with three touchdowns and an interception Sunday. NFL Research shared just how special Mahomes has been in his career.

The 500 Club

The 49ers entered Sunday allowing 255.8 yards per game, then surrendered more than double that total to the Chiefs. The 529 yards the Chiefs rolled up marked the ninth time they had topped 500 yards since Andy Reid became head coach in 2013. All but one of those games was with Mahomes at quarterback.

  1. 551 vs. Cincinnati (Oct. 21, 2018)
  2. 546 at Los Angeles Rams (Nov. 19, 2018)
  3. 543 at Tampa Bay (Nov. 29, 2020)
  4. 537 at New England (Sept. 7, 2017)*
  5. 530 at Tennessee (Nov. 10, 2019)
  6. 529 at San Francisco (Oct. 23, 2022)
  7. 517 at Baltimore (Sept. 28, 2020)
  8. 516 at Las Vegas (Nov. 14, 2021)
  9. 503 vs. Baltimore (Sept. 22, 2019)

Third down wonders

The Associated Press’ Josh Dubow reported the 49ers gave up 26.1 yards per play on third downs when Mahomes was playing (Chad Henne mopped up in the fourth quarter).

Sneed’s sacks

Linebacker L’Jarius Sneed had six tackles, a pass defended and half a sack. That gives him 3 1/2 sacks this season and 6 1/2 in his career. He is nearing a Chiefs career record for sacks by a defensive back. Here is the Chiefs’ top six.

1. 8.0 Ron Parker 2013-18

2t. 6.5 L’Jarius Sneed 2020-22

2t. 6.5 Reggie Tongue 1996-99

4t. 6.0 James Hasty 1995-00

4t. Greg Wesley 2000-07

6. 5.5 Eric Berry 2010-18

Rare win at SF

The Chiefs now lead their all-time series with the 49ers 8-7. Sunday’s victory was their first road victory over the 49ers since a 26-17 win on Dec. 6, 1971.

Jan Stenerud kicked four field goals that day and Otis Taylor had 106 total yards with two touchdowns. Emmitt Thomas had an interception for the Chiefs.
