For Pete's Sake

Chiefs and Bills have played so often the last few years they’re like quasi-division foes

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was stopped short of the goal, but came away with a first-down in the second-half of game action against Buffalo on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The Bills defeated the Chiefs, 38-20.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen was asked by reporters this week about facing the Chiefs and he spoke about playing at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We’ve just got to go out there into a hostile environment, we know how their crowd is,” Allen said. “It’s fantastic to play in. It’s one of the special places you can play in the league, for sure. So, looking forward to the challenge and again, it’s a really good team we’re about to go and play.”

Allen has loads of experience when it comes to Arrowhead Stadium, especially in the past two years because the Chiefs and Bills have become quasi-divisional opponents.

The teams will be meeting on Sunday for the fifth time since Oct. 19, 2020, and four of those games will have been played in Kansas City.

  • Oct. 19 2020: Chiefs 26, Bills 17 in Buffalo
  • Jan. 24, 2021: Chiefs 38, Bills 24 in Kansas City (AFC Championship Game)
  • Oct. 10, 2021: Bills 38, Chiefs 20 in Kansas City
  • Jan. 23, 2022: Chiefs 42, Bills 26 (OT) in Kansas City (AFC Divisional playoff game)
  • Sunday: Kickoff is at 3:25 p.m. in Kansas City

During the span from Oct. 19, 2020 to Sunday, Buffalo has faced the Jets three times, the Dolphins four times and the Patriots five times. Chiefs have played each of their division foes four times in that time frame.

Sunday’s game will be the fourth time since January 2021 that the Bills will be playing at Arrowhead Stadium. And Buffalo will return in the 2023 season.

The Chiefs play the AFC East teams as part of the NFL’s schedule rotation, and the Bills and Dolphins will be the teams coming to Arrowhead Stadium in 2023.

FanSided’s Matt Verderame wrote a story with the headline, “Bills-Chiefs has become the NFL’s defining rivalry of its age.”

“For a true rivalry to emerge, both teams must be capable of beating the other,” Verderame wrote. “There also must be an iconic moment, an indelible image, a marquee matchup which captures the imagination.

“Buffalo and Kansas City checked all boxes in one clash, setting up the next decade.”
