The power structure in the Royals front office changed dramatically on Wednesday.

Team CEO and Chairman John Sherman fired Dayton Moore as the Royals president of baseball operations and said J.J. Picollo, the Royals’ general manager will now have the final say on baseball operations.

That includes manager Mike Matheny’s future. As he nears the end of his third season with the Royals (including the shortened 2020 season),Matheny has a 159-211 record. Some might say that .430 winning percentage is reason enough to part ways with Matheny.

But the Royals have brought up a number of young position players in the past three months and made a change in baseball operations. Some might say that’s reason to give Matheny another season at the helm.
