Royals CEO and chairman John Sherman announced Wednesday that president of baseball operations Dayton Moore had been dismissed from the franchise.

“Dayton agrees this is an appropriate time for change,” Sherman said during a news conference at Kauffman Stadium.

He added: “There’s a gap right now between where we are and where we expected to be.”

General manager J.J. Picollo will assume Moore’s duties, Sherman said.

Moore had been with the Royals since 2006, and the team made a pair of World Series appearances during his tenure, winning the championship in 2015. But the franchise has not had a winning season since that year.

Fans shared their thoughts about Moore’s departure on social media. Some were thrilled by the news. Others were grateful for Moore’s hand in helping the Royals win a World Series title — or a mix of both. A few were a little sad.

Here is a look at what they were saying on Twitter and Reddit.

A fan on Reddit wrote: “Thank you for the championship but it was time! John Sherman showing the fans he isn’t content with losing! Let’s go boys!!! Matheny and Eldred next maybe? Who do we get in his place?”

Another wrote: “What a beautiful day to be a Royals fan.”

“We OK with JJ taking over fully? Seems logical to me but curious to hear what others think,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

Another posted: “While I’ll always be appreciative for the championships, it’s been time for Moore to get relieved. Hopefully Matheny and Eldred are next”

A fan posted on Reddit: “There it is. End of an era. Moore was always religious, but when he started letting evangelical Christianity affect his evaluations of players and coaches (See: Eldred, Matheny), the project was headed south. I’ve always given DM more credit than most for his World Series win. Catching lightning in a bottle as a small market doesn’t happen using conventional tactics, but It was time.”

Another wrote: “I dont like to celebrate people losing jobs, but I am soooo happy this man is not running the show anymore.”
