For Pete's Sake

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ left wrist was taped up during opener in Arizona

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce on the first drive of Sunday’s season opener against the Cardinals in Glendale, Arizona.

Although few, if anyone, noticed it at the time, Mahomes’ left wrist was injured on the play.

When the Chiefs came out for their second drive of the game, Mahomes’ wrist was heavily taped. The good news from a Chiefs perspective is the injury didn’t keep Mahomes from playing in the game.

CBS Sports reporter Tracy Wolfson said it was expected that Mahomes would have an X-ray taken after the game. Here is the play in which Mahomes was injured.

After the first touchdown pass, Mahomes led the Chiefs on scoring drives of 86 and 75 yards as Kansas City took a 23-7 lead into the half.

After the Chiefs came back to the field for the second half, Andy Reid told Wolfson: “It’s definitely sore, but we’ll deal with it after the game.”

The wrist injury didn’t seem to affect Mahomes. He completed 28 of 36 passes in the first three quarters with 334 passing yards and five touchdown throws.
