For Pete's Sake

Cleveland player texts cousin after being robbed of double by Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr.

Shortly after the Guardians beat the Royals 6-5 in 10 innings on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium, Cleveland shortstop Tyler Freeman texted his cousin.

Freeman finished the game with a single and scored a run, but in the ninth inning he had an extra-base hit taken away by Royals rookie Bobby Witt Jr.

Witt dived to snare the ball, and while in foul territory threw a laser to Nick Pratto at first base. Pratto made a great stretch to secure the out.

This was, as Bally Sports Kansas City’s Rex Hudler noted rookie to rookie, and the duo got the Cleveland rookie by a fraction of a second.

Turns out, Freeman kind of has a connection to Witt. In a postgame interview, Freeman was asked about the web gem and he explained why he texted his cousin.

“Funny thing is he was my cousin’s teammate in high school,” Freeman said with a smile. “So I already texted my cousin telling him he better text him (and) say something.”

Alas, there’s nothing the cousin will be able to say to stop Witt from making plays like this ... for years to come.
