MLB’s website confirms an Astros player somehow got four strikes in a plate appearance
Anyone who’s familiar with the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” — and that’s a lot of people — knows it’s “one, two, three strikes, you’re out at the old ball game.”
But for one major-league batter, that wasn’t actually the case on Wednesday.
In the Astros’ 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox, Houston designated hitter Yordano Alvarez took a called third strike but it appears no one noticed.
Not Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill, nor catcher Reese McGuire. Home plate umpire Jim Wolf seemed to lose count of the strikes, and Boston manager Alex Cora never stirred. The announcers failed to catch the mistake, too.
But MLB’s website confirmed there were four strikes in the Alvarez plate appearance.
Here is the video from Twitter user JB and you can count the strikes yourself. Alvarez grounded out, so the extra strike didn’t end up costing the Red Sox.
One day Alvarez can tell his grandchildren he grounded out on a 1-3 pitch.
