Cam Gallagher, traded by Royals, shares farewell message to fans in his ‘second home’
Much of the attention on the Royals’ activity shortly before the trade deadline was about Whit Merrifield, who was dealt to Toronto.
Merrifield had drawn the ire of Royals fans for saying he’d consider getting the Covid-19 vaccine if it meant he might have a chance to play in the postseason. By being traded to Toronto, Merrifield was going to have to make that decision about being vaccinated.
Shortly after the Merrifield trade was announced, the Royals sent catcher Cam Gallagher to the San Diego Padres.
Gallagher shared his thoughts on the trade from the visiting clubhouse at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago after he learned of the deal, and admitted it was tough to leave his teammates.
On Wednesday, Gallagher wrote a farewell note to the Royals and their fans in an Instagram post.
“Thank you KC for everything you’ve done for me and my family. These last 12 years there’s been ups and downs but always could call KC my second home,” wrote Gallagher, who grew up in Pennsylvania. “Nothing but love and respect for the @kcroyals. With that I’m very excited for my new chapter in San Diego!”
The Royals selected Gallagher, 29, in the second round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his big-league debut in August 2017.
