It wasn’t a surprise, but the 49ers made it official on Wednesday as San Francisco released defensive end Dee Ford.

The move had been expected for more than a month, and closes the book on Ford’s time in San Francisco after three seasons.

The 49ers acquired Ford from the Chiefs in 2019 for a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Chiefs used the selection on linebacker Willie Gay Jr.

Ford appeared in just 18 regular-season games with the 49ers, playing 378 snaps and collecting 9 1/2 sacks in three seasons with the 49ers, as Pro Football Talk noted. That story said Ford played in seven games over the previous two seasons because of back issues.

While the Chiefs on Thursday signed former Seahawks defensive end Carlos Dunlap, they likely could afford to bring back Ford on a team-friendly deal.

But ... should the Chiefs bring back Ford? Or is the memory of a certain AFC Championship Game still too fresh to have him return?
