The Angels loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth inning of their game Tuesday against the Dodgers but failed to score and lost 2-0.

Angels center fielder Mike Trout started the attempted comeback with a one-out broken-bat single. Instead of a piece of the bat flying on the field as often happens, the barrel of his broken bat flew into the face of home-plate umpire Nate Tomlinson.

Unfortunately for Tomlinson, the sharp edge of the bat hit him near his left eye. This was a frightening scene.

USA Today reported Tomlinson’s face was cut above his eye and nose, and blood was seen on his face.

Heidi Watney of the MLB Network reported Tomlinson was “sent to the hospital for further testing on his left eye.”

Tomlinson is primarily a Triple-A umpire who apparently was called up to work Tuesday’s game at Dodger Stadium.

Fortunately, it seems Tomlinson was not badly injured. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted an update, saying Tomlinson “managed to avoid serious injury, his crew says.”
