Minor-league team gets wild walk-off win after four straight batters are hit by a pitch
This may be the wackiest ninth-inning comeback, not just of the 2022 season, but ever.
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos scored three times in the ninth inning Sunday and defeated the Biloxi Shuckers 7-6 in a Double-A game in Florida. The Blue Wahoos’ rally didn’t include a single hit. Instead, there was a throwing error, walk and four straight hit batters.
The final three hit batsmen all drove in runs, making it a painful victory for Pensacola, which is a Miami Marlins affiliate.
Harold Chirino came on in the bottom of the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead for Biloxi, a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate. He induced a ground ball from Troy Johnston, but a throwing error allowed Johnston to reach base. Griffin Conine then drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. After that ...
- Luis Aviles Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
- Ray-Patrick Diddier was hit by a pitch to score Johnston, making it a 6-5 game.
- Cobie Fletcher-Vance was hit by a pitch, scoring Conine to tie the game.
- Bubba Hollins was hit by a pitch, scoring Aviles Jr. and giving Pensacola a 7-6 win.
There were 4,235 people in attendance Sunday, and they may never see another game end in such strange fashion. This is bizarre:
