Patrick Mahomes’ top seven moments at The Match: Coors Light, clutch putt and more
When the quartet of NFL quarterbacks reached the fifth hole of The Match on Wednesday night, commentator Charles Barkley offered a suggestion.
“These players should have brought helmets for these fans,” Barkley said. “They’re gonna kill somebody.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Bills’ Josh Allen took on Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady and the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers in the made-for-TV event, and they all had one thing in common. Each hit an errant shot into spectators at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas at one point or another.
Brady and Rodgers won 1-up over Mahomes and Allen.
But here are the top seven Mahomes moments from The Match.
1. J.R. Smith comp
Before the competition, Mahomes said he hoped his first putt would be a good one because he was streaky on the greens. Mahomes likened himself to former NBA player J.R. Smith.
2. Mahomes’ big moment
A Mahomes shot on the opening hole was a dazzler. After he hit the ball, Mahomes joked this event was what he was born to do.
3. Swing Juice
Brady and Rodgers won the first two holes of the 12-hole event. As he headed to the third hole, Mahomes took a drink of Coors Light.
After opening that beer, Mahomes and Allen won the hole. TNT commentator Ernie Johnson called it “swing juice.”
While Brady had a yardage book on the course, Mahomes had a beer.
In fact, Mahomes had a Coors Light in his hand often when driving his cart in The Match.
4. Football toss
At one point, Mahomes and Allen played a little catch ... with a football.
Later, Mahomes had an errant throw.
5. Challenge winner
Mahomes won a long-drive competition and later claimed the closest-to-the hole contest title, knocking a drive a little over 7 feet from the pin on the eighth hole.
Mahomes then drained the birdie putt and gave his team its first lead of the match.
6. Kelce Lake
The green on the 11th hole was near a lake, and Mahomes revealed what was at the bottom of that body of water: Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s putter.
Mahomes revealed that during Justin Timberlake’s tournament, Kelce was unhappy with his putter and gave it to “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon. Fallon then tossed it into the lake.
7. Josh Allen’s admission
Heading to the 12th and final hole, Allen admitted who was the better player on his team.
Allen nearly ended on a high note when he came so very close to sinking a loooong birdie putt on the final hole.
Rodgers made his (much shorter) birdie putt for the win.
