For Pete's Sake

Former Royals catcher Drew Butera used his cap to snag home run ball in Angels bullpen

Former Kansas City Royals catcher Drew Butera may have retired as a player, but he showed Tuesday night that he can still make a big play.

Butera called it a career earlier this year and he joined the Los Angeles Angels as their bullpen catcher.

During his 12 seasons in the majors, Butera played for five teams, including the Royals from 2015-18. Butera’s most memorable moment was catching the final strike of the 2015 World Series at Citi Field.

Butera obviously used his glove to secure the last pitch from Wade Davis. But on Tuesday night, Butera went a different route, using his cap to catch a home-run ball off the bat of LA right fielder Taylor Ward during the Angels’ 10-5 loss to the Rangers.

Bally Sports West shared video of the home run and Butera’s clutch catch that led to a round of high-fives in the Angels bullpen.

Butera also won some cash because he caught the ball with his cap using his left hand, as the announcers noted.
