A pizza-loving baby upstaged interview with Joey Wentz’s mother during his MLB debut
While Joey Wentz’s major-league debut Wednesday with the Tigers didn’t go as he would have liked, there were still some cool moments.
Wentz, the former Shawnee Mission East star pitcher, allowed six runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2 2/3 innings against the Oakland A’s.
But Wentz flashed some leather as he got out of the first inning by making a dazzling defensive play.
And an inning later, Wentz picked up his first strikeout in the big leagues.
In the bottom of the second inning, Wentz’s mom, Jenny, was interviewed on Bally Sports Detroit, and she said there was a big contingent on hand to watch her son’s dream come true.
But a funny thing happened during that TV interview. A family sat down behind her, and it was clear that the baby girl absolutely loved the pizza that dad was feeding her.
This was a sweet interview with Jenny Wentz but it’s hard not to look at a lifelong love of pizza take root in the stands.
Wentz’s time with the Tigers was short for now. He was sent back to Triple-A Toledo.
