One reason why KC Royals’ Whit Merrifield hit a home run: He was ‘feeling sexy’
When the Royals return home from their nine-game road trip, whoever is in charge of the music at Kauffman Stadium needs to play Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” song.
Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield won’t be changing his walk-up song to the 1970s tune by Stewart. But after a breakout three-hit night in the Royals’ 8-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, Merrifield told Bally Sports Kansas City’s Joel Goldberg he was feeling sexy.
Goldberg asked Merrifield if he was intentionally trying to pull the ball during most of his batting practice swings before the game.
“No, it’s just the progression of the season,” Merrifield said in the TV interview. “There’s times where I want nothing to do but hit line drives to right and there’s times where I feel like I need to get the barrel head out and pull some balls.
“It’s nice to be in a warm weather environment that the ball’s carrying a little bit. Got a little sweat going and feel kind of sexy, so I want to try to hit some homers.”
Merrifield, who hit his first home run of the season with a 401-foot blast in the second inning, was congratulated for his big night when the interview was wrapping up.
Goldberg said, “And feeling sexy on the night. Great job, multi-hit Whit. First homer of the year. Congrats.”
“No doubt. I got my wife here,” Merrifield said. “I’m always feeling sexy when she’s here, you know?”
Merrifield also got a late “Salvy Splash” from teammate Salvador Perez, so it made for an entertaining postgame interview.
