For Pete's Sake

Reporter who mistook Duke basketball star for Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes offers mea culpa

Television reporters probably don’t mind being part of a viral video, just so long as the person they are interviewing is the reason for the great interest.

Unfortunately for Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle, he was the cause of a video that went viral ahead of Sunday’s Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix race. Brundle stopped to speak with former Duke men’s basketball star Paolo Banchero.

The thing is, Brundle thought the 6-foot-10 Banchero was actually Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is 6-3.

Video of the interview was widely shared on social media.

Mahomes laughed at the mistake by Brundle as well as Banchero’s response.

Brundle offered a mea culpa of sorts in a Twitter post.

“There’s a reason why I’ve never watched back an F1 gridwalk in a quarter of a century of doing them,” Brundle wrote. “You have no idea how much I dislike doing them but somehow those crazy moments have defined my professional career . Oh well, that’s the way it is.”

It’s possible Brundle was talking about this meeting of sorts with musician Megan Thee Stallion at the gridwalk before a race last year.
