For Pete's Sake

Heckling White Sox fans failed to rattle Kansas City Royals rookie Bobby Witt Jr.

The announced crowd for Wednesday’s Royals-White Sox game at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago was a charitable 12,363.

One benefit from having so few fans at the game was TV viewers being able to hear what some of the more vocal people in the stands were yelling. And there were some Wednesday who tried to rattle Royals rookie third baseman Bobby Witt Jr.

Although Witt has a .206 batting average, he carried a five-game hitting streak into Wednesday’s game. When he stepped to the plate in the seventh inning, Witt was greeted by heckling fans who came up with an unimaginative chant, “Witt can’t hit.”

To be fair, White Sox fans have seen their team score 19 runs in the past eight games, so they know a little something about players who “can’t hit.”

Witt quickly quieted the fans by lacing a single to center. The exit velocity on the single was 101.1 mph. Witt then stole second, took third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3.

Chicago ended up winning 7-3, but this was a comical moment from the game.

Witt is batting .333 with two doubles and two RBIs in the six-game hitting streak.
