Listen to the Twins radio call of Minnesota’s bonkers walk-off win over Tigers
Anyone who has followed a game feed on the MLB app knows “In play, run(s) scored” can mean anything from someone hitting a grand slam to a simple RBI single.
Or, in the instance of the Twins’ wacky 5-4 win over the Tigers on Tuesday it meant a line drive to the wall that maybe could’ve been caught, followed by a terrible relay throw home, followed by two boneheaded mistakes by baserunners, followed by a terrible throwing error that allowed two runs to score to win the game.
Whew.
The Twins trailed 4-3 in the ninth inning at Target Field but had runners on first and second with one out when Miguel Sano lined a single just out of the reach of Tigers right fielder Robbie Grossman.
The relay throw home was off line, but the runners stopped at second and third. Sano for some reason kept running to second and for some reason Gio Urshela decided to run toward third base, which was occupied by Trevor Larnach.
It looked like the Tigers would get an out but catcher Eric Haase airmailed his throw to third, and Larnach and Urshela scored to win the game.
A lot went wrong here but it worked out for the Twins.
“We made some boo-boos on the bases, and we somehow made our way out of it and smell like roses,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told the Star Tribune. “Once in awhile you walk away and you just kind of throw your hands in the air, and you smile, and you take the win.”
Tigers shortstop Javier Báez noted that sometimes “things happen.”
“We play hard, that’s the thing,” Báez told the Detroit Free Press. “We got out of control with the ball, but things happen. It doesn’t bother me because we’re playing hard. We were trying. It’s not like somebody was being lazy. Things happen. I think that ball was a little wet, too.”
The wild play made for a wild radio call. Here is how the Twins radio announcers called the action.
