Should Chiefs make move for Deebo Samuel or go another route in the NFL Draft? Vote now
Deebo Samuel’s desire to leave the San Francisco 49ers led NFL observers this week to say the Chiefs would be a perfect destination for the speedy wide receiver.
Financially that may not work. The Chiefs, who traded Tyreek Hill last month, have roughly $18.1 million in cap space, per OverTheCap.com.
Samuel, who led the league with an 18.2 yards-per-catch average a year ago, is due to be paid about $4 million this season, which is the final year of his current contract. That’s according to Spotrac, which also estimated his market value.
Spotrac shows Samuel could get a four-year deal worth $89.8 million for an average of $22.4 million a year. Pro Football Focus believes Samuel’s market projection would be in the neighborhood of a four-year deal worth $79 million.
The Chiefs could always structure a contract that would fit better for their needs, but Kansas City also has a dozen picks in next week’s NFL Draft. That includes two in each of the first three rounds.
One former general manager thinks a good receiver will be available to the Chiefs in the draft.
The Chiefs also might have the option of moving up in the draft to get a wide receiver. What do you think the Chiefs should do? Trade a first-round pick (and maybe more for Samuel) or go a different route?
