Is Kansas Jayhawks’ Bill Self the new top active coach in men’s college basketball?
Following Villanova’s loss earlier this month to Kansas in the Final Four, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports wrote a column looking at the top active coach in college men’s basketball.
Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski headed to retirement that same day and the headline on Palm’s column was “Villanova’s season over after loss to Kansas, but Jay Wright might be new top active coach.”
Wright ultimately was second on Palm’s list behind Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. But with Wright’s sudden retirement Wednesday, some KU fans were ready to install Bill Self as the best active NCAA men’s basketball coach today.
Self is one of two active coaches to win multiple national championships, along with Rick Pitino, and one of Pitino’s was vacated at Louisville. Self has a career record of 763-229 (.769), and the Jayhawks have won 16 Big 12 regular-season titles in his tenure, along with nine conference tournament titles.
KU fans and others made the case for Self as the nation’s best active coach. Sure, it’s a titular thing at best, but here is a sample of what people were saying on Twitter.
