For Pete's Sake

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes won’t be glued to NFL Draft because he’ll be at bachelor party

The Chiefs didn’t have a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but the year before they held the 32nd and final pick of the opening round.

Ahead of the 2020 Draft, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach texted quarterback Patrick Mahomes and asked who the team should pick in the first round. Mahomes suggested running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and that’s who the Chiefs selected.

In next week’s draft, the Chiefs have the 29th and 30th picks in the first round, but don’t expect Mahomes to be completely focused on his television as the picks are revealed.

“If they ask me stuff, I’ll give my input and stuff like that, but I trust in Veach, I trust in Coach (Andy) Reid,” Mahomes said earlier this week in a Zoom call with reporters. ”If you look at their history, I mean they’ve found players everywhere in the draft that have had success on this team. And so I always trust in them that they’re gonna make the right decisions.

“They keep me in the loop just kind of like everything else, kind of what they’re looking at and stuff like that.”

Mahomes added he has a prior engagement, so he won’t be watching the NFL Draft as it unfolds on April 28-30 in Las Vegas.

“As far as where I will be for the draft, I actually have a bachelor party that weekend,” Mahomes said with a smile. “So one of my best friends from high school, his bachelor party is that weekend. I don’t want to say where, but I’ll be on that. But I’ll be sure to stay in touch and be in tune with what’s going on on draft night.”
