Listen to emotional messages Bobby Witt Jr.’s family left him after call up to Royals
Royals third baseman Bobby Witt Jr.’s phone was humming last week.
Congratulatory texts, phone messages and tweets were all sent to Witt after he made the Royals’ opening day roster, and again after he delivered an RBI double that put his team ahead to stay in his first big-league game.
The Players’ Tribune shared some of those messages from Witt’s family, and it was a cool insight into the closeness of his family.
“Honestly, kind of, I’m speechless,” said Witt’s mother, Laurie. “I still have chills looking at your picture and thinking of all the things you’ve done, like with (Team) USA and with your high school.”
Bobby Witt Sr. told him: “This is the time that you’ve waited for. These are the lights that matter.”
The audio clips were played while showing kid photos of Witt and of him getting the news he’d be breaking spring-training camp with the Royals, taking the field for the first time and his family’s reaction at Kauffman Stadium to his clutch hit.
There may be not crying in baseball, but there were plenty of tears shed in the stands on Witt’s first game in Major League Baseball.
It’s clear Witt has a strong support system in his family.
