Royals baseball is back, and along with it mind-boggling catches, wicked curveballs and clutch hits. But the start of the season also means a portion of the fan base won’t see any of it from their homes.

Once again, Bally Sports Kansas City will carry games on TV. For many people with cable, this will be business as usual with Ryan Lefebvre, Rex Hudler, Steve Physioc, Joel Goldberg and Jeff Montgomery covering 161 games for the network.

But fans who cut the cord have found their options limited and expensive. Here’s how to watch the Royals in 2022 on cable or streaming.

Cable options

These are some of the cable and satellite providers in Kansas City and outside the area that will be carrying Bally Sports Kansas City and thus will give fans a chance to watch Royals games.

  • Spectrum
  • Xfinity
  • AT&T U-verse
  • Consolidated
  • DirecTV
  • Cox
  • Mediacom

Streaming options

In recent years, Hulu Live, Dish TV and YouTube TV stopped carrying Bally Sports Kansas City. The lone available option is DirecTV Stream (formerly known as the AT&T TV streaming service). The cost is $89.99 a month, a hefty price tag for Royals games, although it comes with 90 other channels..

The MLB.TV streaming option is more affordable, but it only applies to areas that don’t have blackout restrictions, which rules out fans in Kansas City and the surrounding region.

A Reddit user expressed frustration on Thursday, hours before the Royals’ first game.

“Two years ago I bought YouTube TV to watch the Royals. Fine. Last year, no Royals,” the fan wrote. “So I bought Hulu TV. Not on there this year. How ... can I watch the games this year. Seriously. MLB subscription won’t show games because I’m in market. How do I watch the ... games? “

Bally Sports is planning to have a direct-to-consumer app in Kansas City later this year that is estimated to cost between $18 and $23. But it can’t come soon enough for fans who want to stream games at the start of the season.

One other Royals game will be available to stream. The April 29 contest against the Yankees will be shown exclusively on Apple+.
