Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard wants former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu to join Raiders

The Chiefs signed more than a very capable safety when they landed Tyrann Mathieu (No. 32) on a free-agent contract last offseason. They brought in a legitimate team leader.

NFL fans this month have been shocked again and again by big trades and huge contracts given to players.

Despite all the movement of the NFL’s star players during free agency, former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu remains unsigned.

Mathieu’s name has been linked to teams, but nothing has come of it, and there has been one strange twist.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week in a radio interview Mathieu and Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons had a long conversation. Oddly, Parsons denied that happened.

Steelers fans on social media have been hopeful their team would sign Mathieu, who turns 30 in May.

But Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert told reporters the Steelers weren’t interested in adding a veteran player such as Mathieu.

“Our preference is always to add players coming off of their first contract or as close to their first contract as they can be,” Colbert said, per Sports Illustrated.

It’s still possible Mathieu could join one of those teams, but at this point he remains a free agent.

One high-profile Raiders fan thinks Mathieu should sign with the Raiders: Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard. He tweeted at Mathieu: “Mathieu_Era #RaiderNation waiting on you bro!”

At least one Raiders player thinks that’s a great idea. Pro Bowl pass rusher Maxx Crosby tweeted this, using one Mathieu’s most popular nickname, the Honey Badger.

“Fun Fact Of The Day… Honey Badgers Are Silver & Black,” Crosby wrote.

Other teams seen as a good fit for Mathieu (by blogs, at least) include the Broncos and Packers. He is considered the best player still available in free agency, so it will be interesting to see where Mathieu, who played the previous seasons with the Chiefs, will land.
