Patrick Mahomes and teammates debated an all-Chiefs hoops lineup. Smack talk ensued
With the first full day of the men’s NCAA Tournament set to begin Thursday, the Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride asked fans on Twitter to pick a starting five college basketball team.
This seemed like a fun exercise:
Fans responded with their picks to fill each position in a hoops lineup. And then some Chiefs players shared their thoughts, and the fun really began.
There was some disbelief and a little smack talk took place, too.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said only one position was up for discussion and he knew which name to put in that spot: his own.
Offensive lineman Kyle Long, who is now a free agent, said he could be counted on ... to use up his allotment of fouls. Mahomes loved the idea.
Wide receiver Gehrig Dieter wasn’t buying Mahomes’ claim that he’d be the best point guard. Mahomes responded to the trash talk with some of his own.
Dieter answered that with a video clip of Mahomes slipping while dribbling during a basketball game.
Mahomes’ retort: “Everyone knows what comes next” after that clip. Dieter had the perfect response.
You may recall Chiefs general manager Brett Veach wanted Mahomes to quit playing basketball.
Like many fans, receiver Mecole Hardman was ready to put defensive tackle Khalen Saunders in at point guard. Mahomes poked fun at Hardman.
Hardman responded by an eye-roll emoji and shot back at Mahomes, saying he would have a different role with the team.
Saunders liked the team Hardman chose, but Chiefs safety Armani Watts wasn’t buying it.
Chiefs receiver Daurice Fountain took issue with Hardman’s team, but only because he forgot to add 6-foot-5 tight end Mark Vital to the lineup.
Chiefs radio announcer Mitch Holthus picked two members of his team, including offensive lineman Trey Smith at center. Saunders said Smith couldn’t guard him.
And, finally, cornerback Juan Thornhill chimed in and thought he also would be the best point guard.
Two things stand out about these conversations: everyone on the Chiefs wants to be a point guard, and the Chiefs players get along really well.
