Three statistics show why AFC West clearly has NFL’s strongest lineup of quarterbacks
Yes, the Denver Broncos made the big splash Tuesday by working out a trade for Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.
But many people looked how this will affect the AFC West as a whole. The division is now home to the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (a former MVP and Super Bowl winner), Wilson (a Super Bowl champ and nine-time Pro Bowler), the Chargers’ Justin Herbert (an offensive rookie of the year who threw for more than 5,000 yards last season) and the Raiders’ Derek Carr (a three-time Pro Bowler who has topped 4,000 passing yards in four straight seasons).
Whew. AFC West defensive coordinators are going to have their hands full. There was plenty of talk about how the division is stacked after the Broncos landed Wilson.
ESPN’s Mike Greenberg asked Twitter followers to name a better quartet of starting quarterbacks in one division in NFL history. There was no obvious answer in the responses.
The Los Angeles Times said the AFC West now has the Mt. Rushmore of NFL quarterbacks.
“The four quarterbacks in the AFC West,” Fox Sports’ Emmanuel Acho said, “might be better than the four best quarterbacks in the NFC.”
If this all sounds like hyperbole, consider these three statistics that show the strength of the AFC West quarterbacks.
ESPN Stats & Info said the four signal-callers all ranked among the top 14 in Quarterback Rating in the NFL last season.
If that wasn’t enough to show the AFC West is home to the best quarterbacks in the league, NFL Research unearthed this gem (which also will make Chiefs fans glad it’s 2022).
And CBS Sports showed the number of Pro Bowl appearances by the AFC West quarterbacks.
Here is perhaps the best thought about the AFC West’s quarterback strength, from The Athletic’s Lindsay Jones:
Well, it was funny anyway.
The Broncos’ acquisition of Wilson likely means they will be featured in one or two more prime-time games in the 2022 season.
