Tyrann Mathieu tweets (including ones he deleted) may indicate he will leave Chiefs
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that he expects the Chiefs won’t re-sign safety Tyrann Mathieu before the start of the NFL’s free agency period.
That doesn’t mean there is no chance of Mathieu returning to the Chiefs. But he will see if another team is willing to pay big for his services.
“My understanding is he’s going to test the market,” Rapoport said on the NFL Network. And I guess there is a chance he’s back in Kansas City, but they have so many priorities. I know he’s a huge, huge part of their team. We’ll see what kind of competition they get from elsewhere.
“Still can play at a really high level, but really it is the leadership that the Honey Badger can bring to any locker room. He’s going to be coveted and probably breaks double-digits as far as his next salary.”
In a series of tweets, Mathieu seemed to back up what Rapoport reported.
On Saturday, Mathieu shared a photo with this message on Twitter: “Replacing me is easy. Getting them to do the same thing I did is damn near impossible.”
On Sunday, he wrote: “We all get what we want, if/ when you believe enough…” He again including a picture with a message. This one said: “Just fall back so they can lean on the ones they think so highly of.”
Mathieu also wrote this message that he later deleted: “Let that man find an apartment first, get settled.... before you ask em to fill these size 10.5 Jordan 1s”
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told The Star’s Herbie Teope last week at the NFL Combine the process of meeting with the agents of pending free agents was beginning, and “hopefully everything ends in a positive direction.”
So it remains to be seen if the Chiefs actually will have to find someone to replace Mathieu’s Jordan 1s.
On Monday morning, Mathieu wrote on Twitter: “The more y’all speak on me the more I realize how much ya don’t know lol” This, too, was deleted.
It will be interesting to see where Mathieu plays in 2022 ... and what else he shares on Twitter.
