NFL Network takes playful jab at Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes during Combine coverage

Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton turned heads Thursday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and wowed those watching on television, too.

Thompson’s unofficial time in the 40-yard dash was 4.21 seconds, and while the NFL later shared that his official time was actually 4.28 seconds, that’s still incredibly fast.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was among the TV viewers, and he was blown away by Thornton’s speed.

Mahomes, who ran a 4.80-second 40-yard dash at the 2017 Combine, offered a plausible explanation for why he didn’t match Thornton’s speed. OK, maybe it wasn’t really so believable, but this was a funny response:

The NFL Network obviously saw that tweet because shortly after that, Mahomes was featured in a Simulcam following Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder’s 40-yard dash. Mahomes’ 40-yard dash was superimposed against Ridder, Russell Wilson and Marcus Mariota.

Rich Eisen of the NFL Network quipped: “No wonder Patrick’s blaming it on the turf.”

After a pause, Eisen made a plug for Mahomes’ scrambling abilities: “By the way, Mahomes has run away from a lot of people.”

Although this was a playful jab at Mahomes, he got a laugh out of it.
