NFL Draft prospect from KC’s Center High on influences of Herm Edwards, Jamaal Charles
Fan attention generally falls off by the third day of the NFL Draft, but one player is expected to hear his name called, and it will be significant news in Kansas City.
This may involve the Chiefs, but there is no guarantee of that happening.
Arizona State running back Rachaad White was an All-State selection at Center High School and he still calls Kansas City home, but perhaps not for long.
DraftTek.com projects White to be a fourth-round pick in next month’s draft, as does the Pro Football Network. Ditto for NFL Mock Draft Database.
Where could he end up?
At the NFL Combine on Thursday, White told reporters he has met with the Chiefs, Bills, Buccaneers and others.
White also compared his game to a Chiefs star he watched growing up: Jamaal Charles, who is the franchise’s all-time leading rusher.
In his senior season with the Sun Devils, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound White rushed for 1,006 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He also caught 43 passes for 456 yards.
There is one other connection to the Chiefs. White’s coach at Arizona State was Herm Edwards, who was the Chiefs coach from 2006-08. White was asked how Edwards prepared him for the NFL.
“One thing he speaks on a lot is being professional, but he didn’t really have to speak on that a lot on that to me because football, I’ve been doing this my whole life, this is something I really want to do, something I really love, I’ve got a lot of passion for this,” White said. “A guy like me, I was professional, I was on time. He just made sure of the little details.”
White later talked more about what he personally had learned from Edwards.
“The biggest thing I learned was poise. He’s the most poised individual I ever met,” White told reporters. “Nothing really ever gets him out of character. He stays the same way. He’s very consistent, too. That’s another thing I really learned from him. He’s just a great guy.”
